Our Mission
Milagros en Medicina (Miracles in Medicine) provides essential medical care and support to underserved communities in remote areas of Cusco, including the Colcha District, Urcos, and Pituamarca.
Through the expertise of pediatricians, internists, and family medicine specialists, we address the critical gap in healthcare access in these regions. We are dedicated to ensuring that individuals, regardless of their location, receive the medical attention they need, including basic medications for both acute and chronic conditions.
Our Story
Milagros en Medicina was founded by Kim Alexander and Jeff Brettler in honor of Kim’s mother, Althea Alexander, who dedicated 50 years to advancing diversity and inclusion as the Assistant Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at USC Keck School of Medicine. Inspired by her unwavering commitment to equitable healthcare, Kim and Jeff established this nonprofit to continue her legacy by bringing medical care to some of the most remote and underserved communities in Cusco, Peru.
In these rural areas, poverty is most severe, disproportionately affecting Quechua-speaking indigenous populations who face significant barriers to education, healthcare, and employment. In 2020, Peru’s national poverty rate rose to 30.1%, its highest level in a decade, further exacerbating these challenges.
To help address this need, our volunteer medical team will be serving patients in the Colcha, Urcos, and Pitumarca districts. The majority of residents in these communities are indigenous Quechua people with limited access to essential healthcare services.
Althea’s life’s work was dedicated to shaping a more inclusive healthcare system, and through Milagros en Medicina, we strive to uphold her vision. By delivering pediatric and family medicine care to those who need it most, we hope to make a lasting impact on these Peruvian communities.
